Meet the new model-off-duty fashion must-haves

Great news for mere mortals: It’s easier than ever to dress like a supermodel.

Once upon a time — about a year ago — runway regulars like Emily Ratajkowski wore crop tops and miniskirts and, gasp, high heels.

These days all you have to do is don a cheeky sweatshirt, swaddle your feet in Uggs and envelope yourself in a gigantic coat. But the laid-back look of the moment is not without style: think more Princess Diana competently running errands and less Ben Affleck hopelessly juggling his Dunkin’ order.

The new off-duty uniform “can be more strategic than it looks,” said Sophie Roche Conti of Conti Communications, a brand communications agency in New York. “There’s a thoughtfulness to it” — unlike the early days of lockdown, when stars entirely gave up on clothes.

“Once they understood that [the pandemic] was going to last a while, the craftier celebrities decided to embrace the power of the paparazzi,” Conti added.

The new look is uncompromisingly cozy, defiantly dishabille and yet kind of cool. Here’s how to get it.

Crewneck sweatshirts

Classic crewnecks put a sleek twist on the comfy casual hoodie, and celebs are topping off their looks with ’em. Sustainable label Sporty & Rich makes saucy sweatshirts with cheekily aspirational slogans like “Wellness” (as seen on Hailey Baldwin) and “Be Nice: Get a Lot of Sleep.”

“It has a real Princess Diana aesthetic,” said Conti — a more polished, self-aware take on workout clothes.

Short Uggs

Like going outside in slippers, but with a bit more dignity. Though they’re most at home with workout wear (see Irina Shayk, who rocks a fuchsia pair), Ugg’s Classic Ultra Mini can go with everything from leather blazers to tie-dye pastel sweatsuits. The super-short style — which hits below the ankle bone — has become so coveted that teens are taking their scissors to their more classic boot styles on TikTok.

North Face jackets

This bulbous 1990s ski-slope staple is the coat du jour among millennial models like Emily Ratajkowski, Joan Smalls and Bella Hadid. Flamboyant fashionistas such as model-actress Jodie Turner Smith and Jennifer Lopez favor the new, flashy North Face x Gucci parkas, which come in vibrant prints and colors.

Split-front leggings

Gen-Z says that skinny jeans are over, but skintight leggings still reign supreme. The look of the moment has slits at the bottom of the legs, as recently seen on model sisters Amelia Gray and Delilah Belle, who are fans of Alo Yoga’s swishy style.

Artipoppe carrier

No utilitarian baby carrier will do for hot mamas like Shay Mitchell, Chloe Sevigny and Gigi Hadid, who have elevated tot-toting into an art. Instead, they nestle their babies inside an eco-friendly Artipoppe carrier, which comes in an array of chic prints (leopard spots, a yin-yang) and starts at $350.
